Lafayette Car Barn (unbuilt)
New Accessory Structures
This project in Lafayette, CA was decidedly a ‘man space.’ Though not constructed, it became a series of interesting studies for a building, or buildings, devoted to a car collection, wine making, and car collector parties. Early ideas for a group of small agricultural buildings gave way to schemes for a larger ‘barn’ that would contain everything and would create a connection to the existing hillside pool and entertainment area. An upper level home office overlooks the shop floor. In the final iteration it is surrounded by transparent curtain wall glazing that contrasts with the solid-walled lower level auto and agricultural spaces. The building is topped off with a photovoltaic roof to supply power for the shop and electric car charging as well as for the pool equipment, creating a net reduction in energy use at the property.
